Thomas Wolfe

Thomas Wolfe entered UNC in 1916 and graduated in June 1920. In Chapel Hill he edited the student newspaper and played the title role in his own play The Return of Buck Gavin, staged by the Carolina Playmakers in March 1919. His first novel, Look Homeward, Angel, was published on October 8, 1929.

Thomas Wolfe's autobiographical first novel, the coming-of-age story of a boy in a North Carolina mountain town modeled on Asheville, which follows him to the state university at Chapel Hill. This Scribner edition, 622 pages with twelve leaves of plates, carries the subtitle a story of the buried life. Topics include Asheville and Chapel Hill fiction, boys, families and mountain life in North Carolina.

Among the pieces are Wallace Kaufman's 'Regard me well', a piece by Frances Gray Patton anatomizing the Southern belle, and early groundwork by Reynolds Price for his first novel; Thomas Wolfe also figures in it. 215 pages.
