  1. Trustees set aside Smith Hall and $25,000 for a Playmakers theatre, and the Carnegie Corporation pays to equip it By June 1923, the Tar Heel reported, the trustees' executive committee had set aside $25,000 to turn Smith Hall, then the law building, into a theatre for the Playmakers. The Weekly said the building was turned over to them in 1923 before any money was at hand, and that the trustees voted $25,000 from the Smith bequest for the remodeling at their June 1924 meeting; Koch remembered the trustees' unanimous vote as coming in 1925. When the remodeling money left the theatre $13,000 short of what it needed for seats, lights and stage equipment, Augustus Thomas took the Playmakers' request to Carnegie, still unanswered in December 1924, and the Carnegie Corporation later sent a check for the balance.
