Sallie Walker Stockard

Sallie Walker Stockard (1869–1963) was the first woman to graduate from the University of North Carolina. After finishing at Guilford College, she entered the university at Chapel Hill in 1897 and received her degree with the class of 1898. She returned for a master's degree in 1900 with a thesis on regional history. The university now honors her among its 'Carolina firsts' on Hinton James Day.

    Sallie Walker Stockard, born at Saxapahaw in 1869 and the first woman to earn a degree from the University of North Carolina, wrote this history of Alamance County, cut from Orange in 1849, as her master's thesis. It runs from the Saxapahaw Indians through the Regulators, the Battle of Alamance and Pyle's defeat to churches, schools and cotton mills, and closes with family histories. First printed in Raleigh in 1900; reprinted in 1986 with notes on the author and an index.
