Paul Smith became owner of the Intimate Bookshop in Chapel Hill in 1950, fitting it with display fixtures designed for his earlier shop in the French Quarter of New Orleans, and used them for French, art, music, cookery and children's books.

Paul Smith (1904-1977) left papers covering 1937 to 1968, in the Southern Historical Collection at UNC, collection 4211. The papers concern bookselling in North Carolina and the Intimate Bookshop in Chapel Hill, and on the publishing side to the Modern Pilgrim Press, the Federal Writers' Project, and Josef Berger's 'Cape Cod pilot', with Cape Cod in literature among the subjects.
News and catalogs from the Old Book Corner, a Chapel Hill bookshop run by Paul and Isabel Smith, who also edited the sheet. Issue 9, from 1981, includes a brief history of the business and of the owners' careers. Volumes of 28 cm, issued by the shop.
