Mary Smith worked in the Pine Room at UNC's Lenoir Dining Hall and, with her cousin Elizabeth Brooks, led the campus foodworkers' strike that began on February 23, 1969. She and Brooks met Governor Robert W. Scott on March 20, 1969, a meeting that helped lead to the strike settlement announced the next afternoon.
