StorylineChapel Hill grows from a college village to a town, 1800–18191800–1819 · 14 events · Between 1800 and 1819 stores, houses and shops went up on Franklin Street, and in 1819 the General Assembly named commissioners for the town of Chapel Hill. Along the way John McCauley opened one of the first stores by 1803, James Hogg built a ten-room house in 1804, and Thomas H. Taylor, Christopher Barbee, Thompson and Trice and Edward Robson added a shoe store, a smithy, a store and the post office. The county court licensed stores to retail spirits in 1817 and 1818, and a student of the class of 1818 remembered about a dozen houses on the main street.

Paul W. Wager drew this reconstruction of Chapel Hill as it stood about 1818, working from the recollections of William Dunn Moseley, 1795 to 1863, of the university class of 1818. The Chapel Hill Historical Society published it in 1976 with illustrations. One map, 27 x 36 cm.
