George Livas

George Livas, a native of Greece, came to Chapel Hill in 1922 to work at the Carolina Confectionary, went into partnership with James Gust in 1929 to run it as a restaurant as well, and became sole owner in 1945. He was a charter member of the Chapel Hill Kiwanis Club and died suddenly in February 1956, aged 52.

Sophia Livas, widow of George Livas, who owned the Carolina Coffee Shop on Franklin Street from the 1940s until 1956, recalls her early life in Greece and her years in Chapel Hill.
