Jonathan Howes came to UNC in 1959 to study city and regional planning and later directed the university's Center for Urban and Regional Studies for 23 years. He sat on the Chapel Hill Town Council from 1975 until 1987, when he was elected to the first of two terms as mayor. He retired from UNC in 2010.
