Joe Hackney has practiced law in Chapel Hill with Bob Epting since 1974, after serving as an assistant district attorney in Orange and Chatham counties from 1971 to 1974. He served 32 years in the North Carolina House of Representatives, including service as Speaker from 2007 to 2011, before retiring from the House in 2012.

Political papers of Joe Hackney, born 1945, spanning 1981 to 2012 and amounting to roughly 50,000 items across seventy five linear feet in the Southern Historical Collection at UNC, collection 70128. The work describes service in the North Carolina General Assembly and politics and government in Orange, Chatham and Moore counties across the late twentieth and early twenty first centuries.
