A history of the Old Well

Mary de Berniere Graves wrote this four page folded brochure on the Old Well, the campus landmark at the University of North Carolina, issued at Chapel Hill in 1941. The illustrated piece doubles as advertising for a lamp made in the shape of the well.

Ink drawing of the College Well by Mary deB. Graves, printed as a postcard. Its caption recalls that the old shed over the well gave way in 1897 to a small columned temple built under President Edwin Alderman, and that a pump later replaced the oaken bucket. Undated.

Mary deB. Graves drew Old East for this postcard. Her caption calls it the first building put up by a state university in the country, recalls the Masonic ceremony for its cornerstone in 1793, and notes that its bricks were fired on university land with mortar made from shells hauled from Wilmington. Undated.

Ink drawing by Mary deB. Graves of the Wisteria Arbor, printed as a postcard. The caption places the arbor along Cameron Avenue near the east gate, at the southern edge of the university's Arboretum, which botany professor W. C. Coker laid out in 1904 on what had been a marshy pasture. Undated.

Louis Graves (1883-1965) and Mildred Moses Graves left roughly 7,700 items in eleven linear feet, a single 1814 document and then a run from 1876 to 1992, in the Southern Historical Collection at UNC, collection 4010. Graves edited the Chapel Hill Weekly, and topics include North Carolina newspapers and their editors alongside family photographs, travel diaries and the social life of the Graves and Moses families.
