StorylineThe sheriff and the taxes: Orange County's sheriffs, 1752–17771752–1777 · 19 events · In colonial Orange County the sheriff collected the taxes, and how sheriffs and their deputies collected them became a grievance that fed the Regulation. The governor chose sheriffs from names the county court sent him, beginning with Alexander Mebane, who returned 1,113 tithables for 1752 and 1753. Thomas Hart's short account and the Assembly bill excusing him from taxes, deputies' seizures of deer skins and livestock, and Tyree Harris's extra charge on late payers came before the 1768 depositions and the rescue of a seized horse at Hillsborough. Regulators whipped Sheriff John Lea in 1769. In 1777 the first court under statehood named Mebane's son sheriff.

An order in Council grants Henry McCulloh's associates warrants for 1,200,000 acres along the Yadkin, Eno and Catawba On a petition from Henry McCulloh, Murray Crymble, James Huey and others, Arthur Dobbs among them, an order in Council allowed them warrants for 1,200,000 acres in the back country, to be located chiefly along the Yadkin, the Eno and the Catawba. Under the grant McCulloh was to settle substantial people on the land to carry on the potash trade and raise hemp and other naval stores. Mark Morgan fails to qualify for his captaincy at the Orange regiment's general muster Reporting on the Orange regiment's general muster, Lieutenant Colonel Josias Dickson told Governor Arthur Dobbs that Mark Morgan had notice of his appointment as captain but did not attend to be qualified. Major Alexander Mebane listed Morgan among captains who refused to act and proposed Thomas Loyd in his place.   3. Thomas Hart is appointed sheriff of Orange County Governor Arthur Dobbs appointed Thomas Hart sheriff of Orange County in 1763, and he served two years. His father-in-law, John Gray, had held the office before him. As collector of taxes Hart became unpopular with the Regulators, though Stokes found no charge that he abused any of them in collecting.
