John Nathaniel Couch taught botany at the University of North Carolina from the early 1920s until 1968, chairing the department from 1944 to 1960 and holding a Kenan chair from 1945. A mycologist elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 1943, he gave the university land in 1977 for botany, and its Botany Library was renamed for him in 1979.
