Frances Armistead (Fanny) Burwell (1838–1856) of Hillsborough studied to teach music at her parents' school. She died on board a steamer while returning home from music lessons in Brooklyn, New York.

Her mother went north to nurse her, and she died at dawn on the steamer Jamestown between New York and Norfolk with both parents beside her, in her eighteenth year; her body was brought home to Hillsborough for burial.
