    Award or honor

    The National Endowment for the Humanities gave Shelby Foote the Charles Frankel Prize, the award now called the National Humanities Medal, as novelist, historian and principal commentator of the PBS documentary The Civil War.

    Award or honor

    The National Endowment for the Humanities gave Charles Kuralt the Charles Frankel Prize, the award now called the National Humanities Medal, for chronicling American life for CBS News, above all in his On the Road reports.

  4. William Ferris receives the Charles Frankel Prize

    Award or honor

    The National Endowment for the Humanities gave William R. Ferris the Charles Frankel Prize, the award now called the National Humanities Medal, as director of the Center for the Study of Southern Culture and a scholar of the American South.

  5. William C. Friday receives the National Humanities Medal

    Award or honor · Chapel Hill

    President Clinton and Hillary Clinton presented Friday with one of the first National Humanities Medals. The NEH cited him as president emeritus of the University of North Carolina, which he led from 1956 to 1986, and executive director of the William R. Kenan Jr. Charitable Trusts.

  6. Jacquelyn Dowd Hall receives the National Humanities Medal

    Award or honor · Chapel Hill

    President Clinton presented Hall with a National Humanities Medal as founder and director of UNC-Chapel Hill's Southern Oral History Program and a scholar of the New South.

  7. NEH funds public access to the New Roots oral history archive

    Property or economic transaction · University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill

    The National Endowment for the Humanities awarded UNC-Chapel Hill a Humanities Collections and Reference Resources grant (PW-51527-14) to open public access to New Roots interviews through a bilingual digital archive.

  8. Anne Firor Scott is awarded the 2013 National Humanities Medal

    Award or honor · Durham

    Scott, a Duke University historian, received the 2013 National Humanities Medal for pioneering the study of southern women. The citation credits her research with establishing women's history as vital to understanding the American South.

  9. Annie Dillard receives the National Humanities Medal

    Award or honor · Key West, Florida

    President Barack Obama presented Dillard with the 2014 National Humanities Medal at a White House ceremony for her reflections on human life and nature.
