John Swofford is named UNC athletics director
Swofford, a former Tar Heel quarterback and defensive back, was named athletics director at 31 and held the post for 17 years, until he became ACC commissioner in 1997.

UNC wins the Sears Directors' Cup
Carolina won the Sears Directors' Cup for its all-sports record under athletics director John Swofford, the only ACC program to win the award.

UNC hires Jenny Levy to start its women's lacrosse program
Carolina added women's lacrosse as a varsity sport and in October 1994 named Levy, then an assistant coach at Georgetown, its first head coach. She is still the only head coach the program has had.
