  2. Construction or physical change · Chapel Hill Alumni build the university's first gymnasium off university land

    After the dancing ban, a chartered Gymnasium Association sold $10 shares to alumni and built a hall 110 by 45 feet on its own land, rented to the university for exercise and used for the 1885 commencement ball. The building later became Commons Hall, the student dining hall.

  4. Chapel Hill Isaac Hall Manning joins the UNC medical faculty

    Manning came to the School of Medicine in 1901 as professor of physiology and began teaching bacteriology in 1902.

  5. Chapel Hill Isaac Hall Manning is dean of the UNC School of Medicine

    As dean for 28 years, Manning improved the school's departments, faculty, facilities and entrance requirements.

  6. Construction or physical change · Caldwell Hall The medical building, Caldwell Hall, is dedicated

    On May 8, 1912, the university opened its new medical building and named it Caldwell Hall for its first president. Dr. Richard H. Lewis presented it for the trustees, and Venable and Dean Isaac H. Manning accepted it.

  7. Law, policy or court · UNC School of Medicine, Chapel Hill Trustees vote to ask for a 200-bed teaching hospital in Chapel Hill

    A June 1 report by Dean Isaac H. Manning, Chase and Dr. Richard H. Lewis found the state 45th in hospital beds and short of doctors. Twelve days later the full board voted to ask the legislature for a 200-bed teaching hospital at Chapel Hill, a memorial to the World War dead, so the two-year medical school could grow to four years.

  8. Law, policy or court · Governor's Mansion, Raleigh Trinity's William P. Few proposes a joint medical school with UNC

    After the trustees' site committee split on December 16, Few met the committee at the governor's mansion and offered a four-year school with two years at Chapel Hill and two in Durham near Watts Hospital, backed by $1 million from each side and a Trinity endowment. Morrison endorsed it that night, but Baptist protest over church and state killed it within weeks.

  9. Chapel Hill Dean Isaac Hall Manning resigns after President Graham overrules his Jewish quota

    Manning limited the admission of Jewish medical students. When Morris Krasny, a rejected Jewish applicant, appealed, President Frank Porter Graham ordered him admitted, and Manning resigned rather than change his decision.

  10. Health or relief action · Chapel Hill Dr. I. H. Manning leads the founding of the Hospital Saving Association

    After a 1933-1934 study of hospital care for people of small means, the Hospital Saving Association of North Carolina, known as the Chapel Hill Blue Cross plan, was founded in 1935. Dr. Isaac H. Manning, longtime medical dean, was its leading figure and first president.

  12. Life event · Old Chapel Hill Cemetery, South Road (NC 54) and Country Club Road, Chapel Hill Medical dean Isaac Hall Manning is buried in the Old Chapel Hill Cemetery

    Isaac Hall Manning (1866-1946), the physician and medical school administrator who started Hospital Savings of North Carolina, the state's first medical insurance plan, was buried in the cemetery.
