  2. Founding or opening · Chapel Hill John W. Canada starts the Canada School in Chapel Hill

    Soon after graduating from the university in 1896, John W. Canada organized a private school in Chapel Hill that prepared students for college. He ran it with his brother Charles, Sallie Wilson and a Miss Hendon until he left for Texas soon after 1900.

  3. Appointment, election or service · Strains School, northwest of Chapel Hill Charles E. Maddry begins teaching Strains School near his boyhood home

    Maddry, who had been a pupil there, took charge of the one-room Strains School below Nunn's Mountain northwest of Chapel Hill with sixty pupils aged five to twenty-one. Two years later he became county superintendent.

  5. Orange County Charles E. Maddry serves as superintendent of the Orange County schools

    While a student at the University of North Carolina, Charles Edward Maddry served as superintendent of the Orange County schools.

  6. Hillsborough Charles E. Maddry is pastor of First Baptist Church, Hillsborough

    Charles Edward Maddry was pastor of the First Baptist Church in Hillsborough while finishing his studies at the University of North Carolina.

  7. Chapel Hill Charles E. Maddry is ordained at the Chapel Hill Baptist Church

    Charles Edward Maddry was ordained to the Baptist ministry at the Chapel Hill Baptist Church, now University Baptist Church.

  8. Appointment, election or service · Orange County The Rev. John C. Hocutt replaces Charles Maddry as county school superintendent

    Maddry resigned in July 1904 to study at the Southern Baptist seminary, and the board chose his friend and former pastor John C. Hocutt to serve out the term. Hocutt stayed until 1908.

  9. Life event · First Baptist Church, Hillsborough Charles E. Maddry marries Emma Parker at Hillsborough Baptist Church

    The former pastor Charles E. Maddry married Emma Parker, daughter of church members T. B. and Penelope Parker, in the Hillsborough Baptist church. Hight C. Moore and the pastor A. C. Hamby performed the ceremony.

  10. Life event · Chapel Hill Joshua W. Gore, professor of physics and dean, dies

    Joshua Walker Gore, professor of physics and dean of the university, died on April 9, 1908. A memorial service followed on May 10, and alumni later gave his portrait for the library.

  11. Law, policy or court · UNC, Chapel Hill Charles E. Maddry urges the faculty to add religious instruction

    At Harry W. Chase's invitation, Maddry, a university graduate just back from an Austin pastorate to lead the Baptist State Convention, met the faculty and described the University of Texas plan, under which denominations paid Bible teachers whose courses earned university credit. No decision was taken; Chase sent the question to the faculty committee on educational policy.

  12. Law, policy or court · President's office, UNC, Chapel Hill Church leaders spend a day with Chase and the faculty on teaching religion at the university

    Baptist, Presbyterian, Moravian, Episcopal and Methodist leaders met in President Chase's office with the faculty committee on educational policy. All favored nonsectarian Bible courses; after a day of argument over who would choose and pay the teachers, the churchmen agreed on courses taught off campus by teachers the denominations selected, with credit from the university.

  14. Hillsborough Charles E. Maddry returns to First Baptist Church, Hillsborough, for his last pastorate

    After his years with the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board, Charles Edward Maddry served his final pastorate at the First Baptist Church in Hillsborough.

  15. Naming or commemoration · First Baptist Church, Hillsborough First Baptist Church of Hillsborough celebrates its centennial

    The congregation marked its hundredth year in November 1953 under Charles E. Maddry, with its new educational building finished for the occasion.

  16. Orange County Charles E. Maddry writes a history of Mount Moriah Baptist Church

    Charles Edward Maddry wrote a history of Mount Moriah Baptist Church in Orange County; it survives in his papers at UNC.

  17. Life event · First Baptist Church, Hillsborough Charles E. Maddry's funeral is held at Hillsborough Baptist Church

    Charles E. Maddry, pastor of the church at the start and end of his fifty-three-year ministry and former head of the Southern Baptist Foreign Mission Board, died on September 17 and was buried at Richmond after a funeral in the Hillsborough church.
