Local figure
Manly Wade Wellman settled in Chapel Hill soon after moving to North Carolina in 1947, drawn by the resources of the University of North Carolina library, and taught creative writing in the university's Evening College. He wrote fiction and nonfiction, including Civil War and local history, folklore and science fiction, and won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for nonfiction in 1955.

Wellman, a prolific writer of history, folklore and fiction who lived in Chapel Hill from 1947, had earlier written 'The County of Moore, 1847 to 1947' (1962).

He covers Marshall, Hot Springs and Mars Hill, the Shelton Laurel massacre of 1863 and stories gathered over decades of summers in the county, and sets out to correct the rumor and exaggeration long attached to its people. Published in 1973, 222 pages, with drawings by Frank Holyfield.
Chapel Hill writer Manly Wade Wellman retells ten notorious North Carolina murders committed between 1808 and 1914, among them the case of Tom Dula, the Tom Dooley of the ballad. The victims range from a Confederate general and an orphan girl to a small boy and a political boss. Published by the University of North Carolina Press in 1954, 190 pages, it won the Edgar Award for best fact crime book.
