  1. Walter R. Mears dies in Chapel Hill Walter R. Mears, the Pulitzer Prize-winning Associated Press political reporter, died at his Chapel Hill apartment on March 3, 2022. He had made his home in Chapel Hill after retiring in 2001 and had taught journalism at UNC for a time.
