Mary Turner Lane (1918-2009) was the founding director of women's studies at UNC Chapel Hill. Across five sessions recorded by Pamela Dean between September 1986 and October 1987, she traces her upbringing, her parents' regard for education, her years at Salem College, a start in elementary teaching, and a later career as faculty member and administrator at the university, including the program's founding and women's social position on campus.
