S. H. Hobbs Jr. taught rural social economics at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill from 1916 to 1968 and edited the University of North Carolina Newsletter from 1922 to 1956. He served on the Chapel Hill Planning Authority and in 1936 bought an Orange County farm for agricultural experiments.

Topics include information resources for social science in Chapel Hill and across the southern states, and the teaching of social science in secondary schools. Samuel Huntington Hobbs Jr. (1895-1969) taught sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and his papers cover 1916 to 1965 with later material from 1999. Part of the Southern Historical Collection at UNC, collection 3909. The papers concern his work in the Department of Sociology and to twentieth century economic and rural conditions in North Carolina.
