Hinton, Charles Lewis, 1793-1861 · 1838

Papers of Major Charles L. Hinton of Wake County, state treasurer from 1839 to 1843 and 1845 to 1851, dated 1838 to 1850. The earliest are letters to Samuel F. Patterson, commissioner for selling Cherokee lands, on arranging the sale and on Whig politics. Other items touch on the Bingham School, William J. Bingham, Chapel Hill and enslaved people who escaped. State Archives of North Carolina, PC.248.

Hinton's motion the board declared secret societies and clubs harmful to the literary societies and to good morals, ordered the faculty to suppress them and barred admission to any student who would not pledge not to join one.
