Edwin Wiley Fuller entered the University of North Carolina in the fall of 1864 and studied two years in Chapel Hill. His novel Sea-Gift (1873) was the first novel set in part in the town, and it used the Dromgoole legend of a duel fought near Piney Prospect.

Edwin W. Fuller's nineteenth-century novel follows John Smith, a young North Carolinian, from his childhood and family circumstances through his student years at the University of North Carolina, with parts of the story set in Wilmington and during the Civil War. The Chapel Hill chapters are an early fictional picture of student social life at the antebellum university.
