1. January 28, 1925 Brodie S. Carr opens a grocery in a small filling-station building north of Hillsboro Out of work after losing his timekeeper job at Eno Cotton Mills, Brodie S. Carr opened a grocery in a small frame service-station building on the northern edge of Hillsboro. It grew into Carr's Super Market. People: Brodie S. 2. May 24, 1945 B. S. Carr reopens his enlarged grocery between Hillsboro and Dud's Tavern as a self-service store B. S. Carr held an open house on May 24 for his remodeled brick grocery on Highway 70-A between Hillsboro and Dud's Tavern. New wings on each side had enlarged the store to 2,010 square feet, and it had been refitted for self-service with fluorescent lights and a refrigerated vegetable counter. About 400 people registered for the drawing for free grocery baskets. Place: B. S. 3. March 3 and 4, 1950 B. S. Carr Grocery reopens as Carr's Super Market, Hillsboro's first supermarket After a full renovation, the B. S. Carr Grocery reopened as a self-service supermarket with an open meat counter, refrigerated produce cases and parking for 50 cars. 4. January 15, 1952 Hillsboro Building and Loan reports its biggest year At its annual stockholders' meeting the Hillsboro Building and Loan Association reported assets of $918,097 at the end of 1951, up 41 percent, with 108 home loans made during the year, 40 of them for new houses, and record dividends of $21,103. 5. February 13, 1953 Hillsborough citizens form a committee to keep the Forrest Clinic open About 20 citizens meeting at the Presbyterian church named a Citizens Committee on the Clinic, chaired by R. O. Forrest, to find a way to run Dr. D. Efland Forrest's clinic, opened three and a half years before, as a community institution. The clinic building had been sold at a foreclosure auction on February 4, and one plan offered was a local corporation that would buy it and lease it to young doctors. People: Brodie S. September 22, 1959 Hillsboro Savings and Loan buys a Churton Street lot for a downtown office The 46-year-old association, begun in 1913 in the back of a West Hillsboro drugstore and for ten years in its own building on Hillsboro Avenue, bought a lot on Churton Street south of the A. H. Graham office building from Graham and the Fred Cates estate, cancelling a planned auction, to build a downtown drive-in office reached from Churton and East King streets. March 9, 1961 Carr's Super Market opens its new store across the street in Hillsboro Carr's Super Market began a six-week grand opening of its new $250,000 store, five times the size of its old one across the street, with a terrazzo floor.
