  2. Statistic or record · Eno River northwest of Hillsborough Faucett's grist mill is working at the Eno ford northwest of Hillsborough

    The county's architectural survey records the Faucett Mill in operation by at least 1792, at a place where a wagon road forded the Eno River northwest of Hillsborough, and says it may have been built as early as the 1760s by the Quaker milling family of Isaac Lowe. Mills of this kind ground the corn and wheat that Orange farmers hauled north to Petersburg or south toward the Cape Fear, and doubled as gathering places; the Faucett family later added a house that served as an inn and tavern.

  4. Construction or physical change · Faucett Mill, Eno River The Faucett family builds a two-story house and inn beside their Eno mill

    After buying the mill at the Eno ford northwest of Hillsborough, the Faucetts put up a two-story house next to it that also served travelers as an inn and tavern. It still stands beside the mill.

  5. Early twentieth century · 1900–1944

  6. Construction or physical change · Faucett House, Faucette Mill Road, Hillsborough vicinity F. Vernon Altvater restores the Faucett House and joins a moved early house to it as a wing

    F. Vernon Altvater and his wife, who bought the Faucett House tract in 1937, restored the house between 1938 and 1940 and called it the Coach House. They took down the early 1800s Naile Johnson House from the St. Mary's Road area and rebuilt it as the rear wing.

  7. Civil rights era · 1945–1975

  8. Property or economic transaction · Faucett House (Chatwood), Faucette Mill Road, Hillsborough vicinity Charles Blake and his wife buy the Coach House and rename it Chatwood

    Charles Blake, a retired MIT professor who banded birds as a hobby, and his wife bought the Faucett House tract in 1956 and named it Chatwood for their interest in birds. In the 1950s they began the rose and perennial garden that became a noted heritage rose garden.

  10. Naming or commemoration · Faucette Mill, near Hillsborough The Faucette mill and coach house join the Study List

    The National Register Advisory Committee placed the Faucette mill and coach house on the Eno on North Carolina's Study List, its list of properties likely to qualify for the National Register.
