  2. Carrboro's new school building goes up

    Construction or physical change · 301 West Main Street, Carrboro

    Carrboro's new brick school building was under construction in the summer of 1921 and was expected to be ready for the September term. The old schoolhouse was advertised for sale at the end of the year.

  3. A freight wreck at the Occoneechee Farm siding sets a gasoline tank car burning

    Disaster or outbreak · Occoneechee Farm siding, Southern Railway, east of Hillsborough

    Three cars of a Southern freight train, one a gasoline tank car, left the track at the Occoneechee Farm siding east of Hillsboro. The tank car caught fire and burned through the night, a flour car and a lumber car burned, and passengers were transferred around the torn-up track until repairs the next afternoon.

  4. The State Highway Commission builds a concrete bridge over the Eno at Hillsboro

    Construction or physical change · Eno River Bridge, Exchange Park Lane (old US 70), Hillsborough

    The commission let State Project 453, a bridge over the Eno at Hillsboro, to contractor George W. Kane for $30,651.20 on February 8, 1922, and work was well along by July. The reinforced concrete bridge, now on Exchange Park Lane, was the main way into town from the south until 1964.

  5. The Susan Graham memorial fountain replaces the old town well on Franklin Street

    Naming or commemoration · Franklin Street, west of the campus entrance, Chapel Hill

    Townspeople set up a marble drinking fountain designed by Roger Noble Burnham at the curb of Franklin Street, on the site of the old town well, in memory of Susan Williams Graham.
