  2. Black church members in Orange County give $3.04 each to their churches, against $4.00 for white members

Statistic or record · Orange County

Walter Patten's survey worked out what religion cost each church member in the county in 1914: $3.04 for Black members and $4.00 for white members. Pastors' pay came to the same $2.05 a member in both groups; the gap was in buildings (88 cents against $1.04) and above all in missions (13 cents against 91).

  3. Patten's survey finds nearly nine in ten Black households in Orange County living in homes they own

Statistic or record · Orange County

The survey reported that close to nine-tenths of the dwellings of Black families in the county were occupied by their owners, with town households ahead of country ones in screening and upkeep. Branson read the figure as a measure of real economic gains since the war.

  4. The county sanitation campaign reaches Black residents through their preachers and churches

Health or relief action · Orange County

In the 1915 county-wide drive for better sanitation, organizers found the Black churches the only real way to reach Black families. Black congregations took lantern-slide talks on unsafe privies as a fit church concern, while some white churches thought them out of place.

  5. The survey finds fewer than six Black lodges and benefit societies in the whole county

Statistic or record · Orange County

Patten's study counted fewer than half a dozen sick benefit societies, burial orders and fraternal lodges among the county's Black residents. The societies in the Black churches of Hillsborough, Chapel Hill and Carrboro were mostly church aid groups that raised mission money and cared for buildings and parsonages.

A dated event is a fact, filed on the page of the subject it belongs to: a person, a place, a theme, or a named event or history. Pages are subjects, with their own works and sources; the Place, community, or institution filter also gathers the institutions that recur in the entries without a page of their own. The page opens on the highlights; a search or any filter looks through every dated event and storyline, and each filter’s counts say how many entries choosing it would show alongside the others. A storyline is a longer history that gathers related dated events, and each storyline’s page lists its own. Counts give dated events and storylines separately. Dates come from the sources named on the cards and from the index’s event pages; where sources disagree, the card follows the county records. Entries marked approximate or needing research say so on the card; the rest were checked against the source named on it. The correction link under the entries opens the contact form; name the entry and its date and the Friends will check the source. Suggest an event →
