  2. Closing or ending · Piney Mountain Road, Chapel Hill Township Piney Mountain School closes and its pupils go to Morris Grove School

    The county consolidated Piney Mountain School, one of its Black schools, with Morris Grove School. A new gravel road into the area let a bus carry the children out; the school had been kept open only because no bus could reach it.

  3. Construction or physical change · Orange County Superintendent Proffit's $1 million school bond pays for a new Efland school for Black children and county lunchrooms

    The $1,000,000 school bond passed under Superintendent Glenn T. Proffit paid for grounds and a building for the Efland school for Black children, an addition to Hillsboro High School, and lunchrooms at Aycock, Efland, West Hillsborough and White Cross. It also bought a cannery and gymnasium at Aycock and a remodeling and auditorium at Caldwell.

  4. Appointment, election or service · Orange County The county board elects G. Paul Carr superintendent of the Orange County schools

    Gabriel Paul Carr, principal of Angier High School, became the county's tenth school superintendent in 1951, succeeding Glenn T. Proffit, who left for the Harnett County superintendency. Carr served eighteen years, through the consolidation of schools and the desegregation of the system, and resigned effective June 30, 1969.
