  2. M. C. S. Noble joins the university as professor of pedagogy

    Appointment, election or service · Chapel Hill

    Marcus Cicero Stephens Noble, superintendent of the Wilmington schools, was invited to return to the University of North Carolina in 1898 as professor of pedagogy. He also directed the university's summer school.

  4. The university opens its first summer term of regular courses

    Founding or opening · Chapel Hill

    For the first time the university offered a twelve-week summer term of regular courses that counted toward a degree, opening on June 12, 1900, alongside the four-week Summer School for Teachers. Tuition was twenty dollars.

  5. Education professor M. C. S. Noble takes a Queen Anne house on West Cameron Avenue

    Property or economic transaction · 214 West Cameron Avenue, Chapel Hill

    The two-story frame Queen Anne house at 214 West Cameron Avenue, with a front gable and wraparound porch, is believed to have belonged about 1907 to Marcus Cicero Stephens Noble, later dean of the School of Education.

  6. Masons lay the cornerstone of the Carnegie library

    Construction or physical change · Chapel Hill

    On the Saturday of the 1907 commencement the Grand Lodge of Masons, led by Grand Master Francis D. Winston, laid the cornerstone of the new library built with Andrew Carnegie's gift. Construction had begun in October 1906.

  7. Joshua W. Gore, professor of physics and dean, dies

    Life event · Chapel Hill

    Joshua Walker Gore, professor of physics and dean of the university, died on April 9, 1908. A memorial service followed on May 10, and alumni later gave his portrait for the library.

  8. The School of Education is established with M. C. S. Noble as dean

    Founding or opening · Chapel Hill

    The university formally established its School of Education as a professional school in 1913, with M. C. S. Noble as dean. He held the post until 1921 and kept teaching until he retired in 1934.

  9. J. Cheshire Webb is appointed chairman of the Orange County Council of Defense

    Hillsborough

    J. Cheshire Webb of Hillsborough was appointed chairman of the Orange County Council of Defense, with M. C. S. Noble, C. H. Robertson, Shepperd Strudwick, S. W. Andrews, John P. Hughes and P. C. Collins as members. He led the council through the war and the 1919 homecoming.

  10. Orange County holds a Fourth of July war rally on the UNC campus

    Publication, speech or performance · Chapel Hill

    At the Governor's request the UNC Summer School invited the county to its July 4, 1918 celebration, and at least 3,000 people came for a parade, a flag raising and S. M. Gattis's address in Memorial Hall. The county Council of Defense met in Gerrard Hall, and Adolph Vermont's pageant on French-American friendship played in Battle's Park.
