  1. Early twentieth century · 1900–1944

  2. Law, policy or court · Governor's Mansion, Raleigh Trinity's William P. Few proposes a joint medical school with UNC

After the trustees' site committee split on December 16, Few met the committee at the governor's mansion and offered a four-year school with two years at Chapel Hill and two in Durham near Watts Hospital, backed by $1 million from each side and a Trinity endowment. Morrison endorsed it that night, but Baptist protest over church and state killed it within weeks.

  3. Appointment, election or service · UNC, Chapel Hill Governor Morrison offers the law deanship to Justice Walter P. Stacy, who declines

At a trustees' executive committee meeting in early November, Morrison bypassed Chase and offered the deanship to Stacy on the spot. Stacy turned it down, and Chase saw the move as an intrusion on the president's role.

  4. Law, policy or court · Governor's office, Raleigh (for UNC, Chapel Hill) Trustees adopt higher law school standards over Governor Morrison's objection

At a four-hour meeting in the governor's office, attended by about half the trustees, 45 of them lawyers, Morrison argued against stiffer entrance rules, but a voice vote approved Chase's plans. The board put off naming a dean rather than accept Chase's out-of-state choice.

  5. Civil rights era · 1945–1975

  6. Morrison Residence Hall, Chapel Hill Morrison Residence Hall opens, named for Cameron Morrison

The university completed Morrison Residence Hall, a men's dormitory, in 1965 and named it for former governor Cameron Morrison, an influential trustee who had backed the university's expansion program in the 1920s.

A dated event is a fact, filed on the page of the subject it belongs to: a person, a place, a theme, or a named event or history. Pages are subjects, with their own works and sources; the Place, community, or institution filter also gathers the institutions that recur in the entries without a page of their own. The page opens on the highlights; a search or any filter looks through every dated event and storyline, and each filter’s counts say how many entries choosing it would show alongside the others. A storyline is a longer history that gathers related dated events, and each storyline’s page lists its own. Counts give dated events and storylines separately. Dates come from the sources named on the cards and from the index’s event pages; where sources disagree, the card follows the county records. Entries marked approximate or needing research say so on the card; the rest were checked against the source named on it. The correction link under the entries opens the contact form; name the entry and its date and the Friends will check the source. Suggest an event →
