  2. Trustees fix the university at Chapel Hill and list its Orange County land donors

    Law, policy or court · Chapel Hill

    Meeting on December 5, 1792, the trustees voted unanimously to place the university at New Hope Chapel Hill and recorded nine donors of Orange County land, among them Matthew McCauley (150 acres) and William McCauley (100 acres). Each donor could have one student educated free of tuition.

  3. James O'Kelly organizes Damascus Christian Church

    Founding or opening · Damascus Christian Church

    James O'Kelly, who had broken with the Methodist Episcopal Church in 1792, organized Damascus Christian Church near the Orange, Durham and Chatham lines and served as its first pastor.

  5. Burials begin in the Matthew and Martha McCauley family cemetery

    Founding or opening · Old Fayetteville Road, near University Lake

    The family burial ground of Matthew and Martha McCauley, who gave land for the university, lies on Old Fayetteville Road near University Lake. Its graves date from about 1825 to 1850.
