  2. Alexander Julian opens Alexander's Ambition on Franklin Street

    Founding or opening · Franklin Street, Chapel Hill

    At 21, while his parents were away for a month, Alexander Julian took over a Franklin Street storefront and opened his own shop, Alexander's Ambition, at the site where Julian's now operates.

  4. UNC's basketball team takes the court in Alexander Julian's argyle uniforms

    At Dean Smith's request, the Chapel Hill native Alexander Julian redesigned the Tar Heel men's basketball uniforms, adding an argyle side panel that debuted in the 1991-92 season and became a symbol of the university.

  5. UNC graduates wear Alexander Julian's true-blue recycled gowns

    UNC's new commencement gowns, designed by Alexander Julian in true Carolina blue with white piping and made from recycled plastic bottles in North and South Carolina mills, were first worn at the May 2011 Commencement.

  6. UNC awards Alexander Julian an honorary Doctor of Arts

    At Spring Commencement, UNC-Chapel Hill gave Alexander Julian, a Chapel Hill native who entered with the Class of 1969 and designed the argyle basketball uniforms, an honorary Doctor of Arts, one of six honorary degrees that year.
