  2. North Carolina's first Boys State meets on the UNC campus

    Founding or opening · UNC campus, Chapel Hill

    The Institute ran the week-long civics program for the state American Legion, modeled on one begun in Illinois in 1935. About 135 high school boys spent up to three hours a day in class on government besides sports, heard Governor Hoey and other officials, and elected Douglass Hunt their governor.
