  2. Life event · Chapel Hill Professor Adolphus W. Mangum dies

    Mangum, a Methodist minister who had taught mental and moral science, history and English since the reopening, died after a long illness. Josephus Daniels gave a memorial address in Gerrard Hall on May 31, 1891.

  4. Appointment, election or service · Chapel Hill Josephus Daniels serves on the University of North Carolina board of trustees

    Daniels became a member of the university board of trustees in 1901 and remained an active trustee until his death in 1948. During the 1920s he pressed for consolidating the state colleges at Chapel Hill, Raleigh and Greensboro into one university, and in 1930 he championed Frank P. Graham to succeed Harry Woodburn Chase as president.

  5. Publication, speech or performance · Memorial Hall, UNC, Chapel Hill Secretary of War Newton D. Baker gives the wartime commencement address

    Baker spoke to an overflowing Memorial Hall hung with flags, the day after draft registration, warning that the war would be long and urging those who stayed to keep learning. Of the 161 graduates in the class of 1917, 65 were already in training camps, and all dances were canceled.

  6. Appointment, election or service · Memorial Hall, UNC, Chapel Hill Harry W. Chase is inaugurated as president in Memorial Hall

    The new ROTC unit led a procession of students, faculty, alumni and delegates from over a hundred institutions to Memorial Hall, where Chief Justice Walter Clark gave Chase the oath. Chase asked the state to see its University as the university of the South; the day ended with a banquet at Swain Hall and a reception in Bynum Gymnasium.

  7. Publication, speech or performance · Chapel Hill Governor Broughton welcomes guests at the commissioning of the Navy Pre-Flight School

    The dinner program for the commissioning of the Naval Aviation Pre-Flight School at Chapel Hill on May 23, 1942 has Governor J. Melville Broughton offering the welcome, and Josephus Daniels giving greetings to the Navy Department representatives and to Commander O. O. Kessing. The school trained 18,700 pre-flight cadets before it was decommissioned on October 15, 1945.

  9. Naming or commemoration · Chapel Hill UNC names its new bookstore building for Josephus Daniels

    In 1968 the university named its newly completed bookstore, which housed the Book Exchange and other student services, for Josephus Daniels, class of 1885 and a long-time trustee.

  11. Naming or commemoration · Chapel Hill UNC trustees vote to remove Josephus Daniels’s name from the student stores building

    On July 29, 2020 the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees voted 11 to 2 to remove four names from campus buildings, among them Josephus Daniels. The Daniels Building became UNC Student Stores, and the names of Charles Brantley Aycock, Julian Shakespeare Carr and Thomas Ruffin Sr. were removed at the same meeting.
