  2. Hank Anderson directs the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department

    Appointment, election or service · Chapel Hill

    Henry "Hank" Anderson III, who took a master's degree in recreation administration at UNC in 1969, directed the Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department from 1969 to 1977.

  4. Hank Anderson starts a Saturday breakfast meeting of Black and social justice leaders

    Founding or opening · Chapel Hill

    Anderson began hosting a Saturday morning breakfast at Dip's Restaurant where African American and social justice leaders discussed problems and political strategy. The group later made endorsements in Chapel Hill and Carrboro elections and carried his name.

  5. Hank Anderson serves on the Carrboro Board of Aldermen

    Appointment, election or service · Carrboro

    Anderson was elected to the Carrboro Board of Aldermen in 1993 and re-elected in 1997, and the board chose him as mayor pro tem in 1994 and again in 1997. He served until his death in October 1998.

  6. Carrboro renames its community park for Hank Anderson

    Naming or commemoration · Hank Anderson Community Park, Carrboro

    The Carrboro Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to rename Carrboro Community Park on N.C. 54 for Alderman Henry "Hank" Anderson III, on a motion by Alderman Jacquelyn Gist. The 55-acre park is one of the town's largest.

  7. Joal Hall Broun joins the Carrboro Board of Aldermen

    Appointment, election or service · Carrboro

    In early 1999 Joal Hall Broun, an assistant public defender, was appointed to fill out the term of the late Alderman Hank Anderson, and she won election to the board that fall. She served on the board until 2011.

  8. Chapel Hill dedicates the Peace and Justice Plaza marker

    Naming or commemoration · Peace and Justice Plaza, Chapel Hill

    The town unveiled a granite marker at Peace and Justice Plaza, in front of the old post office on Franklin Street, naming nine local activists: Charlotte Adams, Hank Anderson, James Brittian, Joe Herzenberg, Mildred Ringwalt, Hubert Robinson, Joe Straley, Lucy Straley and Gloria Williams. The Town Council had named the plaza in 2006 and set criteria for later honorees.
