Rupert B. Vance joined the sociology faculty of the University of North Carolina and Howard W. Odum's Institute for Research in Social Science in Chapel Hill in 1928, became a Kenan Professor in 1945, and sat on the board of governors of the UNC Press. He wrote Human Geography of the South (1932).
