Papers of C. Hugh Holman, who lived from 1914 to 1981, spanning the 1930s to the 1980s, 26,000 items in twenty six linear feet in the Southern Historical Collection at UNC, collection 4537. Topics include southern American literature and the writers Holman studied, among them Ellen Glasgow, William Gilmore Simms and Thomas Wolfe, along with American radio plays, the National Humanities Center and his work as a college administrator.

Commencement is held outdoors at the Davie Poplar, and Chase receives an honorary degree With Memorial Hall torn down, the 339 graduates received diplomas at a stage by the Davie Poplar, seated on the old hall's benches as loudspeakers in the trees carried John H. Finley's address. Honorary degrees went to Ellen Glasgow, Martha Berry, Francis P.
