Frederick P. Brooks Jr. founded UNC's computer science department, the country's second free-standing doctorate-granting one, chaired it for two decades and led its research in interactive computer graphics and virtual environments, retiring in 2015 after 51 years. UNC named its second computer science building, built in 2008, for him.
