Historic deeds of Orange County

Our records of 22,729 Orange County deeds, from the colonial Register of Orange and Deed Books 1 to 42, 1752 to 1874, drawn from Mark Chilton’s published abstracts. Search a name, a place, a creek or a citation such as 13/49.

How the search works
  • Every word must appear in our record of the deed: its parties, land, waterways, neighbors, roads and landmarks, goods, the enslaved people it names, and earlier title. Put a phrase in quotation marks ("Eno River") to find the words together.
  • The search matches the start of a word (Faucet finds Faucett) and small spelling differences such as doubled letters and -ey or -y endings (Jenny, Jenney). Spellings that differ more, such as Faucett and Fossett, need a search of their own. Select Exact spelling to match whole words only.
  • To find a deed by its citation, type the book and page: 13/49.
  • The Kind of deed and Mentions choices are assigned automatically from the published abstracts and may be incorrect. Check the deed page before relying on one.
