Enslaved people in Orange County records

5,287 name appearances of enslaved people in Orange County deeds, wills and bills of sale from 1754 to 1867, and the 906 couples who registered their marriages in 1866. Search a first name, a name variant, or an enslaver’s name.

These records treated people as property. This index helps descendants and researchers find records naming those people. About these records

How the search works
  • Spellings vary from record to record (Jenny, Jenney, Ginny), so the search matches close spellings and the start of a name: Han finds Hannah and Hanna. Select Exact spelling to turn that off.
  • Enslaved people are usually recorded by a first name alone. Adding the enslaver’s surname (Hannah Faucett) finds records naming both.
  • A name in one record and the same name in another may or may not be the same person. Each record page shows the ages, family ties and people recorded with them, which help tell people apart.
