Hillsborough designates its local historic district
In the same year the Hillsborough Historic District was nominated to the National Register, the town designated a local historic district.

The Hillsborough Historic District is listed in the National Register
The original one-square-mile town laid out in 1754 around Churton and King streets entered the National Register in 1973 as the Hillsborough Historic District. Its survey and nomination were brought up to date in 2014.

Additional National Register documentation submitted in 1980 identified archaeological resources within the Hillsborough Historic District; more followed in 1984.

State reviewers approve adding the Frederick archaeological site to the Hillsborough Historic District
The Office of State Archaeology brought site 31Or231, listed on the agenda as the Frederick Site, to the State Professional Review Committee as an amendment to the Hillsborough Historic District. On April 12, 1984 the committee approved it with the day's other National Register nominations, without separate discussion.

On January 22, 2014 the National Park Service accepted a new survey and history of the Hillsborough Historic District, the first full update of the 1973 listing, documenting the town's buildings from the colonial period to the 1960s.
