  2. UNC Lineberger Cancer Center is established

    Founding or opening · Chapel Hill

    UNC established a cancer research center in 1975 under founding director Joseph Pagano. Later named for the Lineberger family of Belmont, who helped fund its 1984 building, it earned NCI comprehensive status in 1990 and is North Carolina's only public one.
