  2. Property or economic transaction · Orange County Tenant farmer Jessa Buttler mortgages his horse and crop to landowner C. R. Miller

    Orange County tenant Jessa Buttler signed a chattel mortgage pledging his horse and his entire crop of corn, wheat, oats and tobacco to landowner C. R. Miller for a debt of $88.20. By October 1890 the debt stood at $106.04 despite partial payments.

  4. Publication, speech or performance · Chapel Hill Student Government's 'The Strike Continues?' release turns the strike toward canvassing and calls a Memorial Hall teach-in

    Tom Bello's Student Government press release declared that rallies alone would not end the war and redirected the strike, which it said now involved well over half the student body, toward canvassing, petitions and visits to Congress. It announced a faculty panel on the war for 3 p.m. Monday, May 11 in Memorial Hall with Samuel Wells, James Leutze, Andrew Scott, Daniel Pollitt and David Lapkin.

  6. Protest or organizing · Cane Creek, Orange County Cane Creek is chosen as the site of a new reservoir and area landowners organize against it

    A consultant's feasibility study concluded that Cane Creek, west of Carrboro, was the best site for a reservoir to supplement University Lake, and OWASA began assembling land there. Cane Creek residents and farmers formed a conservation group and fought the project in court for years, arguing that it would destroy farms and hasten the decline of agriculture and that expanding University Lake had not been properly considered.
