  2. Chapel Hill High School graduates its first desegregated class

    Chapel Hill

    The class of 1967 was the first to finish at the merged Chapel Hill High School. The school board then debated the fate of the empty Lincoln building through 1969 and 1970, and voted to keep it for school use after sustained objection from Black residents to selling it.

  4. Carrboro Civic Club's public library closes

    Closing or ending · Carrboro

    The Carrboro Civic Club, which had run a volunteer public library since 1950 with some help from the town and Hyconeechee Regional Library, told the town in 1976 that it could no longer administer it, and the library had closed by 1977. An attempt in 1974 to turn the library over to town government had failed, and Hyconeechee's bookmobile served Carrboro until 1995.

  5. Orange County commissioners decline to fund a Carrboro library

    The county commissioners turned down the Friends of the Carrboro Library's request for library funding in 1993. With a new middle school under construction, the Friends were encouraged to pursue a library in the school's media center instead.

  6. Carrboro Board of Aldermen votes to help fund a branch library at McDougle

    Law, policy or court · Carrboro

    The Carrboro Board of Aldermen voted unanimously to fund a Carrboro branch of the Orange County library that would share space and resources with the McDougle Middle School media center. Carrboro and Orange County both provided funding for the library that year.

  7. Community Land Trust in Orange County is incorporated

    Local activists and governments incorporated the Community Land Trust in Orange County to keep homes permanently affordable through ground leases.

  8. Orange County and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro schools put the McDougle branch library under contract

    Law, policy or court · Carrboro

    A contract between Orange County and the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Board of Education made the public library in the McDougle schools a branch of the Orange County Public Library, with a county-employed branch librarian. The schools provided space and utilities, the county paid for furnishings, insurance, janitorial service and staff stipends, and branch hours were not to overlap school hours.

  9. Burma Art Therapy Project begins in Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools

    Founding or opening · Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools

    The Art Therapy Institute began a school-based art therapy program for adolescent refugees from Burma in partnership with Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and the refugee community in Orange County. A later UNC evaluation estimated that about 400 Burmese families lived in the county.
