John L. Sanders joins the Institute of Government
After a year as a federal appeals court clerk and a year at a Raleigh law firm, Sanders returned to UNC in 1956 as an instructor and assistant director of the Institute of Government. He was named assistant professor of public law and government in 1957 and full professor in 1965.

John L. Sanders leaves the Institute to become the University of North Carolina's vice president for planning
Sanders gave up the directorship of the Institute of Government in 1973 to become vice president for planning of the University of North Carolina system, where he helped draft its first long-range plan. Henry W. Lewis directed the Institute in his absence.

John L. Sanders returns as director of the Institute of Government
Sanders resumed the directorship of the Institute of Government in 1979 and held it until 1992, a second term of thirteen years after his first of eleven. He retired from the faculty in the mid-1990s.

John L. Sanders chairs the UNC-Chapel Hill Buildings and Grounds Committee
For ten years Sanders chaired the Chapel Hill campus committee on buildings and grounds. He also sat on the university's Bicentennial Observance Planning Committee and the Chancellor's Advisory Committee on Historic Properties.
