  2. John N. Couch begins teaching science at Chapel Hill High School

    Chapel Hill

    Back from army service in France, John N. Couch began teaching at Chapel Hill High School in 1920 while he finished a master's degree in botany at the university, which he received in 1922.

  3. John N. Couch chairs the university botany department

    Chapel Hill

    John N. Couch succeeded his teacher William C. Coker as chairman of the botany department in 1944 and led it until 1960. He was given a Kenan professorship in 1945.

  5. A land gift from John N. Couch endows a botany professorship

    Chapel Hill

    In 1977 John N. Couch gave the university land to be sold for the support of botany. The proceeds established the John N. Couch Professorship in Botany in 1984.

  6. The university's Botany Library is renamed for John N. Couch

    Chapel Hill

    In 1979 the Botany Library at the University of North Carolina was renamed in honor of the mycologist John N. Couch, who had retired from the botany faculty in 1968.

  7. UNC merges its botany and zoology departments over John N. Couch's opposition

    Chapel Hill

    In 1982 the university combined the Botany and Zoology departments to form a Department of Biology. John N. Couch, the retired botany chairman, opposed the merger and worked in the unsuccessful effort to stop it.
