  2. Alfred Moore prosecutes at Hillsborough and is made attorney general

    Appointment, election or service · Hillsborough

    Acting as prosecutor in several major cases at Hillsborough while the state attorney general was away, Alfred Moore of Wilmington did well enough to be appointed attorney general that same year. He held the office until 1790 and built Moorefields west of Hillsborough while serving.

  4. Justice Alfred Moore dies and leaves Moorefields to his son

    Former U.S. Supreme Court justice Alfred Moore, builder of Moorefields, died and willed the house to his son Alfred, a lawyer who went on to serve in the House of Commons and as its speaker in 1823-1824.

  5. Alfred Moore the younger dies and leaves Moorefields to Francis Nash Waddell

    Alfred Moore the younger, a former Speaker of the House of Commons from Brunswick County, died at his home in Orange on July 25, 1837, in his fifty-fifth year. Moorefields passed to his son-in-law, Francis Nash Waddell.

  6. The Moorefields estate is divided and the house goes to Augusta Moore

    The Moorefields lands were divided, and the tract with the house went to Augusta, a daughter of Alfred Moore the younger. The family kept it until 1913.

    After more than a century with Alfred Moore's descendants, Moorefields was advertised for public sale, and its later owners were not Moore relatives until 1949.

  10. Edward T. Draper-Savage buys Moorefields and begins restoring it

    Property or economic transaction · Moorefields, SR 1135, near Hillsborough

    Edward T. Draper-Savage, related to the Moore family by marriage, acquired Moorefields and began its restoration. The 1972 nomination found the house in excellent condition.
