John Motley Morehead serves as a tutor at the university
After graduating in 1817, Morehead was one of the university's two tutors for that year, with Priestly Hinton Mangum.

Alumni gather at Chapel Hill and organize the university's Alumni Association
Graduates meeting at commencement organized the Alumni Association with former governor Morehead in the chair. At the 1844 meeting they adopted a constitution and chose Morehead as the association's first president.

Alexander Jackson Davis makes his first visit to the university
Davis came to Chapel Hill in February 1844, and that year trustee John Motley Morehead met with him and Swain there about the design of a new hall, later Smith Hall. Davis stayed in touch with Swain and the trustees about campus work until the mid-1850s.

Morehead gives the Alumni Association address in Gerrard Hall
With no orator found from the class of thirty years before, the association's president, former governor Morehead, delivered the address at the meeting of 36 alumni in Gerrard Hall.
