  2. Life event · Chapel Hill Caroline Lee Hentz befriends and tutors the poet George Moses Horton in Chapel Hill

    While her husband Nicholas Hentz taught languages at the university, Caroline Lee Hentz befriended the enslaved poet George Moses Horton, tutored him in grammar and helped edit his work. She sent some of his poems to the Lancaster Gazette in her Massachusetts hometown, which printed them in 1829.

  3. Appointment, election or service · Chapel Hill Nicholas Marcellus Hentz becomes the university's professor of modern languages

    Hentz took the chair of modern languages at the university, the first professor at Chapel Hill whose duties were to teach French and Spanish regularly. While there he also studied spiders and published on them in scientific journals.

  4. Appointment, election or service · Chapel Hill Hentz leaves the university and Chapel Hill for Kentucky

    Hentz left the university in 1831. The local Presbyterian community had frowned on his Roman Catholic upbringing and suspected his politics, and after he left French was dropped from the curriculum.
