John Bunting co-captains Carolina's ACC championship football team
Linebacker John Bunting was co-captain, with quarterback Paul Miller, of the 1971 Tar Heels, who went 9-3 and won the Atlantic Coast Conference title. He was named first-team All-ACC and the team's defensive MVP.

John Bunting becomes Carolina's head football coach
John Bunting, a former Tar Heel linebacker and 1972 UNC graduate, was named head football coach at the University of North Carolina after assistant jobs in the NFL.

Bunting's Tar Heels beat sixth-ranked Florida State 41-9 at home
In Carolina's 2001 home opener, moved after the September 11 attacks postponed the SMU game, Bunting's team beat Bobby Bowden's Florida State 41-9 for his first win as head coach.

UNC announces John Bunting will not return as football coach
Athletic director Dick Baddour told Bunting he would be relieved at the end of his sixth season, and the university announced he would not coach the Tar Heels in 2007. He coached the last five games.
